Astronaut Reveals Mental Health Struggle Following Deluge of Online Abuse Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also featured high-profile passengers.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, describing a phone call from a fellow crew member in the days following the landing.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her studies and years of training to the personal milestone of her heritage – was drowned out under the tide of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of survivors of assault.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she has stated the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She concluded that despite the negativity, considerable good had emerged from the flight, such as spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a brief suborbital flight that passed the Kármán line of outer space.

The diverse crew also featured accomplished professionals from various fields.

The venture behind the mission is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
