Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People purchasing these treatments must be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to original mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who lose weight through dieting usually have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened regain.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Users who have come off the medication describe a sudden return of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger flipping and you're instantly starving," recalled an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is more common among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts caution that while these medications are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
