Paris Saint-Germain Defeats Olympique de Marseille in a Shootout to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in the Middle East.

Trophy celebration scene

The Parisian club has now won the season-opening cup on fourteen separate occasions.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a dramatic equaliser followed by a perfect spot-kick decider to get past their arch-rivals in the Gulf and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions victory.

The Champions League holders seemed to be coasting towards a straightforward win in the match featuring the Ligue 1 winners and the French Cup holders after the French winger opened the scoring early on.

However, the southern French side struck two times in the closing moments to take a shock advantage. Initially, Mason Greenwood scored from the spot-kick, before Willian Pacho inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable twist of fortune, the Portuguese striker snatched a crucial leveler in the dying seconds to force the contest into a deciding shootout. PSG goalkeeper Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, stopping crucial kicks from O'Riley and Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, Vitinha, Nuno Mendes, and the young talent all converted successfully for Paris Saint-Germain to complete a convincing shootout win.

Now 14-time winners Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Olympique de Marseille after achieving a domestic double, have now lifted this competition for the twelfth time in the last thirteen seasons.
